Weight gain

Why is it so much harder to stay slim as we age? New research from Sweden published in Nature magazine, has shown that lipid turnover in the fat tissue decreases during ageing and makes it easier to gain weight.

In the study, scientists studying the fat cells in 54 men and women over an average period of 13 years, found that regardless of whether they gained or lost weight, participants showed decreases in lipid turnover in the fat tissue, that is the rate at which lipid (or fat) in the fat cells is removed and stored. Those who didn’t compensate by eating less calories gained weight by an average of 20 percent.

Previous studies have shown that exercise will speed up lipid turnover in fat tissue – yet another reason to stay as active as possible.
